Understanding the Ciphers in Geocaching
Caesar Cipher (ROT13)
The Caesar cipher is one of the simplest and most widely known encryption techniques, dating back to Roman times. It is a type of substitution cipher in which each letter in the plaintext is replaced by a letter some fixed number of positions down the alphabet. It’s a classic for a reason: simple to understand but effective enough to hide a clue from a casual glance.
Our tool uses ROT13, which is a specific case of the Caesar cipher where the shift is 13 places. This means 'A' becomes 'N', 'B' becomes 'O', and so on. The beauty of ROT13 is its symmetry; applying it twice will decrypt the message back to the original text. It's a common choice for geocaching puzzles because it's easy to implement and doesn't require sharing a secret key between the cache owner and the finder.

A1Z26 Cipher
The A1Z26 cipher is another simple substitution cipher where each letter is replaced by its corresponding number in the alphabet. So, 'A' becomes 1, 'B' becomes 2, 'C' becomes 3, and so on, up to 'Z' which becomes 26. This method turns words into a sequence of numbers, which can be a clever way to hide coordinates or clues.
You'll often see this cipher as a string of numbers separated by spaces or dashes. For example, the word "CACHE" would be encoded as "3 1 3 8 5". Our tool will automatically convert these numbers back into letters to reveal the hidden message. Important: Be sure your numbers are separated by spaces for the tool to work correctly. Any non-numeric characters other than spaces will be ignored.
