Why Tracking Expiry Dates is Crucial
First aid supplies, especially sterile items and medications, lose their effectiveness over time. Using expired products can be ineffective at best and dangerous at worst.
- Sterile Items: Bandages, gauze, and wipes can lose their sterility. The packaging can degrade, allowing bacteria to contaminate the product, which can lead to infection when applied to a wound.
- Medications: Ointments, pain relievers, and allergy medications can lose their potency after their expiry date. In an emergency, you need them to work as expected.
- Adhesives: The adhesive on bandages and tapes can become less sticky and fail to properly secure a dressing.
Regularly checking your first aid kit—we recommend at least twice a year—ensures that you are always prepared for an emergency with safe and effective supplies.
