Understanding the Factors

Thermal comfort is complex and subjective, but it's influenced by several key environmental and personal factors. This tool uses a simplified model based on the ASHRAE 55 standard to predict how comfortable you might feel.

Temperature

The most obvious factor. We measure it in Celsius.

Clothing (clo)

Clothing provides insulation. A typical business suit is about 1.0 clo. Shorts and a t-shirt are around 0.3-0.5 clo.

Air Movement

Air movement (like from a fan or draft) helps cool the body by increasing heat loss. Measured in meters per second (m/s).

Other factors not included in this simplified model are metabolic rate (are you active or resting?), humidity, and radiant temperature from surfaces like sunny windows or cold walls.

This tool provides an estimate based on a simplified model and should be used for informational purposes only.
