About ASCII Art
ASCII art is a graphic design technique that uses computers for presentation and consists of pictures pieced together from the 95 printable characters defined by the ASCII Standard from 1963 and ASCII compliant character sets with proprietary extended characters.
The term is also loosely used to refer to text-based visual art in general. ASCII art can be created with any text editor, and is often used with free-form languages. Most examples of ASCII art require a fixed-width font (non-proportional fonts, as on a traditional typewriter) for presentation.
How It Works
Our tool analyzes the brightness levels of your image. It divides the image into small sections and replaces each section with a character from a predefined set. Darker areas of the image get denser characters (like '@' or '#'), while lighter areas get sparser characters (like '.' or ' '). The result is a mosaic of text that recreates your image.
Tips for Best Results
- High-contrast images work best. Simple images with clear subjects and backgrounds often produce the most recognizable ASCII art.
- Experiment with width. A larger width will create a more detailed, but also much larger, text image. A smaller width is better for a more abstract, stylized look.
- Choose the right font. For viewing your ASCII art, always use a monospaced font like Courier, Monaco, or any other "mono" font. This ensures that every character takes up the same amount of horizontal space.
